Or the warehouse could have been out of stock like they were many a time when I worked for AAFES (which individual stores have no control over). And the warehouses were NIS most times when the ships were delayed getting into port or the merchandise was held up through customs.

I don't know (nor care, really) about snack foods... I do know they seem to have a problem with the concept of "thinking ahead" to anticipate stock on many items.

I give the advice that should you need any kind of food or consumable, always go to DECA first, as they will have lower prices anyway. Shop online for anything else you have a lead time on- like winter clothing, birthday/christmas gifts, kids shoes, printer ink, etc. If you can see the need coming- stay out of the BX to get it.

Problem comes when you either have to get an item fast, (nail polish remover, hangers, or thread and buttons to fix your pants...)  or it is something that is not reasonable to ship (furniture, TVs, or super fragile items like christmas ornaments). With the exchange rate, btw, you can take your fall back of "go on the economy" elsewhere- not only is the dollar weak, but the prices in the US are going up, so our COLA is not on level with prices in town. AAFES doesn't seem to think ahead or learn, based on years past of complaints of running out of items, to order more this year to compensate for the short coming.

They also seem to think it more important to carry a whole lot of really expensive crap that is not so very popular instead of the lower priced items that we want. Almost as if they want us to get frustrated and "settle" for the bigger price tag. That seems apparent more so this time of year, as no one wants to see the disappointed look of a kid on Xmas morning. Make sure you check the BX after Christmas when many of those high priced bits of crap are discounted because, as usual, AAFES missed the target on what the customers want or are asking for.

This is EXACTLY what they think and how they plan. Offer a 10 cent ornament for the tree or one that is "ritzy" and costs $6.95...no choice here...buy a small quantity of the cheapies, advertise them....shopper sees the add, is excited about decorating with their kids for Christmas...goes in, all gone....now..disappoint the kids or pay the extra...they KNOW what will happen in most cases.

I agree that AAFES has a real problem with thinking ahead. I know in the past I have requested items (because AFN commercials reccomend you do that so that AAFES knows what people want) and then when you make said request, they tell you to look online. Go figure. I guess you have to buy cheetos online.

WHAT!!!!!????! No freaking way .. how could those bastards be so dagnab clever to devise such a nasty little scheme... Next thing you know they might put the ladies dpet as far awa from the Power zone as possible.. causing the hubby and wife to split up as soon as the y enter the store....  :o

Then they might even pipe music in the store in order to distract a customer and make the time they spend in the store seem less than it actually is.  :o

Who knows, they might  be witty enough to draw customers in the store by producing these new fangled Sales Flyer thingers....  :o

It's basic retail folks.... despite how much you might not like it, we have to make money..we are not a goverment founded  agency..

Except that AAFES is NOT a for-profit agency in the normal retail sense.

The reality is that the "profit" you are so proud of is only supposed to be like this:

1) Cover cost of doing business (payroll, utilities, capital improvements)
2) Meet MWR funding pledges
3) Cover the costs for the next fiscal month

There should NOT be millions in the bank gathering interest. AAFES does NOT belong on the Fortune 500 list.

If AAFES were a real retail outlet like the outside, the prices would be cheaper and the items people want would be stocked on a regular basis. I though that was what RETEK was for to begin with (instead of a means to eventually phase out reorder associates and direct vendor purchases).

For those of you who don't know, RETEK was supposed to usher in the idea of "sell one, receive one" so that there is a constant flow of merchandise moving through the system. That was why there was a mandate issued to empty the warehouses: merchandise was supposed to self-replenish based on sales. All we've seen is more and more items become unorderable and the shelves get barer and barer because of phase-outs with no replacements.

If AAFES were a "real retail on the outside " then a very large % of your stores would be closed...

We operate several "loss" stores b/c we have to be at certain locations to serve the troops....

If AAFES were a real retail store on the outside, a large % of stores would be closed because they have no idea how to run a business. I went in to my PX in the middle of July to buy a pair of swimming trunks, and as I expected them to be, they were out of stock.

So I asked when they expected more in and I was told that they weren't getting any more in, that they were starting to stock for the fall. In the MIDDLE OF JULY! Another fine example of terrible planning and bad business.
